PE

Rationale

At Holy Trinity C of E Primary School we believe Physical Education is an important part of the curriculum, with the potential to change young people’s lives for the better. We believe a balanced programme is essential to the growth of the whole child: their intellectual, social, emotional, spiritual and physical development. It provides the foundation for a healthy lifestyle and promotes character building, co-operation and positive self-esteem.

We encourage the children to achieve their personal goals, to feel satisfaction and enjoyment as well as provide the physical challenges which enable them to value the importance of determination, effort and teamwork. We offer numerous opportunities for children to participate in competitive activities, both in house and inter-school festivals, and are active members of the Surrey Heath Primary Schools' Sports Association.

Intent

Physical Education at Holy Trinity aims to inspire an active generation that not only know that activity is required for a healthy lifestyle and creating good habits to make it a reality.  Within a supportive environment children will be encouraged to flourish in a range of different physical activities promoting the growth of the whole child whether as part of a competitive or a collaborative environment.

Our PE Curriculum, along with PSHE and science, teaches children about the importance of healthy living and learning about the need for good nutrition. At HT we aim for children to develop the necessary knowledge and skills which will have a positive impact on their future by becoming physically active citizens to benefit their long-term health and well-being.

Implementation

PE is delivered in two separate hour lessons each week.

  • One lesson is outside games and includes skills such as ball control, athletic activities and fair and tactical play.
  • The second hour is mainly indoors and covers gym and dance allowing children to confidently move their bodies and use equipment in various ways.

For 5 year groups outdoor PE is delivered by a specialist coaching company, the remaining year groups have outdoor games delivered by their class teachers.  Indoor dance and gym is delivered in the main hall by class teachers across the whole school.

  • In addition all year groups take part in a daily mile activity.  In years 3-6 there are out of hours clubs available including netball (free), football (paid) and basketball (paid).
  • Children are encouraged to enjoy active moments in the classroom such as Joe Wicks activities to break up learning activities.
  • The house team system allows for a competitive sports day each year that is run through years 1 – 6 with a broad spread of activities.
  • Lunch time clubs are run for voluntary sign up by young leaders in addition to the coaching company, including dance and football.

Year 5 and 6 children are encouraged to become young leaders and develop their leadership skills through the Sports Crew training.
